Celtic Carols

Away at a Campsite
(to away in a manger)

Away at a campsite
Kipping in a church hall
A bunch of rough warriors lay down on stone floors
Some officers glumly looked down where they lay
Knowing few would be conscious till noon the next day

The youngest were moaning
Throwing up on the floor
But most of the veterans had passed out long before
The queue for the toilets was a pain for them all
and they wished they had found the alternative hall

At eight the next morning
The few who were keen
Practicing combat in the car-park were seen
The battle was over far to quickly I fear
But still all of us come back to Yorvik each year.

Once in Wales Royal Cantref
(to once in royal Davids city)
Once in Wales Royal Cantref
Stood a lonely hill top fort
Where king Cludog did his brewing
Better wine could not be bought
Elderberry was that wine
Don’t drink too much at a time

He came down to share his bounty
With his subjects loyal and true
But he made so much wine and beer
All the rest of us had some too
All of us raised horns and glasses
Then we got completely plastered

We Three Celts
(to we 3 kings)
We three Celts proud warriors are
Raiding sheep we traverse afar
Field and fountain
Moor and mountain
Wondering where we are

Oh, where shall we get beer tonight
I wonder if we we’ll start a fight
Homeward reeling
Still sheep stealing
Let’s get back before first light

Many farms we’ve raided these years
Sneaking up with shields and spears
Chasing Flossie
Fleece so glossy
Did anyone bring the shears?

Oh, where shall we get beer tonight
I wonder if we we’ll start a fight
Homeward reeling
Still sheep stealing
Let’s get back before first light

This one was inspired by a trip to a show in hastings a few years back. Both broke down and with the help of the AA we caniballised tyres from one car (which went home on a flatbed) twice, to fix the other (mine)

(To swing low sweet chariot)

Went down to Hastings,
What did I see?
Coming for to carry us home,
A pair of Vauxhall Astra’s,
Almost identically,
Coming for to carry us home,

Swing low, sweet Vauxhall Astra,
Coming for to carry me home,
Swing low, sweet Vauxhall Astra,
Coming for to carry me home,

Burst a tyre near Bracknell,
What did I see?
Coming for to carry us home,
An AA rescue vehicle,
Coming straight to me,
Coming for to carry me home,

Swing low, sweet AA tow truck,
Coming for to carry me home,
Swing low, sweet AA tow truck,
Coming for to carry me home,

Got us into Bracknell
What did I see?
Trying for to carry me home,
The other vauxhall Astra,
Broken down near KFC,
Lending me a tyre to get home,

Swing low, sweet AA tow truck,
Coming for to carry me home,
Swing low, sweet AA tow truck,
Coming for to carry me home,

Lost a second tyre,
What did I see?
Passing us to carry them home,
Another AA vehicle,
So far number three,
Heading for to carry them home,
Swing low, sweet AA tow truck,
Coming for to carry me home,
Swing low, sweet AA tow truck,
Coming for to carry me home,

Stood out in the rain,
What did I see?
Coming for to carry me home,
Another AA tow truck,
Taking us to Chievely,
Coming for to carry me home,

Swing low, sweet AA tow truck,
Coming for to carry me home,
Swing low, sweet AA tow truck,
Coming for to carry me home,

Got to the service station,
What did I see?
Coming for to carry me home,
A waiting AA vehicle,
With another wheel for me
Coming for to carry me home,

Swing low, sweet AA tow truck,
Coming for to carry me home,
Swing low, sweet AA tow truck,
Coming for to carry me home,

Got back to Cardiff,
Quarter past three,
Feeling very glad to be home,
Thank god for AA tow trucks,
That came to rescue me,
And that we had mobile phones,

Swing low, sweet AA tow truck,
Coming for to carry me home,
Swing low, sweet AA tow truck,
Coming for to carry me home,

Yorvik Navigator

We rolled into Yorvik late one Friday Night
With plenty of booze and prepared for a fight
We knew where the hall was or so we all thought
But in Yorks one-way system we always get caught

Navigator, Navigator, just show me the map
We’re totally lost your directions are crap
Don’t listen to Gore when he says to turn right
Or we’re certain to wander round Yorvik all night
Yes, we’re certain to wander round Yorvik all night

After the battle and the ship burning too
We all had a pint or possibly two
Jase knew a short cut or so he did say
So like sheep we all followed him out of our way

Navigator, Navigator, just show me the map
We’re totally lost your directions are crap
Don’t listen to Jase when he says it’s alright
Or we’re certain to wander round Yorvik all night
Yes, we’re certain to wander round Yorvik all night

Interlude

We marched through the night and we never knew where
The people we questioned, they just didn’t care
Eastwards and Westwards, to the North and the South
A different direction came out of each mouth

Navigator, Navigator, just show me the map
We’re totally lost your directions are crap
The locals are starting to make me uptight
And we’re certain to wander round Yorvik all night
Yes, we’re certain to wander round Yorvik all night

After much wandering we found out the way
From the first honest Yorkshireman we’d met that day
It wasn’t that far as we’d journeyed all round
And were back where we started in old Yorvik town

Navigator, Navigator, just show me the map
We’re totally lost your directions are crap
Don’t listen to people so sure they are right
Or we’re certain to wander round Yorvik all night
Yes, we’re certain to wander round Yorvik all night

Duke William Takes It All

I just want to talk
About the wars I won through,
It’s not hurting me,
It’s English history,
I’ve hurled all my spears,
All my foes are run through,
Nothing more to say,
No more Thegns to slay,

Duke William takes it all,
See Saxon England fall,
For centuries they held sway,
Then lost it in one day,

We were called to arms,
Knowing we could rule here,
I figured it made sense,
Saxons are so dense,
Building me a keep,
Thinking I’d be strong there,
Isn’t winning cool,
We make all the rules,

Duke William takes it all,
See Saxon England fall,
For centuries they held sway,
Then lost it in one day,

Noble horsemen prance,
As the lines advance,
And someone standing near,
Ends up on a spear,
Duke William takes it all,
The Saxon Fyrdsmen fall,
Huscarls die in pain,
The Normans win again,

Duke William takes it all,
See Saxon England fall,
For centuries they held sway,
Then lost it in one day,

But tell me can they kill,
The way we used to kill you,
Does it feel the same,
Mortal wounds again,
Somewhere deep inside,
Filleting your entrails,
But what can I say,
It’s just not your day,

Duke William takes it all,
See Saxon England fall,
For centuries they held sway,
Then lost it in one day,

The Duke will now decide,
The likes of you abide,
Dividing out of hand,
All of England's land,
Knights again ride forth,
Harrowing the North,
Yet more Saxons fall,
Duke William takes it all,

Duke William takes it all,
See Saxon England fall,
For centuries they held sway,
Then lost it in one day,

I just have to laugh,
If the Saxons feel sad,
I’ll take all your land,
And cut off your hand,
I apologise,
If it makes you worthless,
No more need to fear,
Feudalism's here,

Duke William takes it all,
Duke William takes it all,

Borderlands
To the tune of “Streets of Loredo”

If ever you wander down by the Welsh border
Come stop by and see me and all of my kin
I'm Gwydion ap Iestyn ap Athrwys ap Hywel
ap Cadog ap Gwwion ap Cynan ap Gwyn
We'll feast you on mutton and harp for your pleasure
And give you a place to sleep out of the cold
Or maybe we'll meet you out on the dark highway
and rob you of horses and weapons and gold

My neighbour from England has come across raiding
slain 6 of my kinsmen and burned down my hall
it cannot be bourne this offence and injustice
I've only killed 4 of his last I recall
I'll rally my neighbours llewelyn and Owain
Well cut him down as for the border he rides
But yesterday Owain stole 3 of my cattle
So first I'll reclaim them and 3 more besides

We need a strong prince to direct our resistance
Heroic, impartial, of noble degree
My brother's wife's 4 cousin's foster son Cludog
Is best for the job as I'm sure you'll agree
What matter that Rhys is the old princes nephew
He's exiled to Ireland and shall not return
I know this for every time boats he is building
I send my spies money to see that they burn

Last evening my brother and I were at war
over two feet of land on a boundary we share
But early this morning I hear he's been murdered
I'll not rest until I avenge him I swear
Yes, we are just plain folk who mind our business
Honest and loyal and full of good cheer
So if ever you wander out by the Welsh border
Come stop by and meet all the friendly folk here

Always be Ardwyn

She can kill with an axe
She can wound with her mace
Push her too far she'll punch you in the face
And she only reveals what she wants you to see
She says her names Hannah
But she'll always be Ardwyn to me

She can make you posh kit
She'll teach you how to make it
Or she'll batter your shield
Till she brutally breaks it
And She'll always keep sewing quite obsessively
Yeah, she works round the clock
But she'll always be Ardwyn to me

CHORUS:
Oh--she takes care of herself
She can win if she wants
She's ahead of her time
Oh—she's as fierce as a lion
So don't piss her off
Or it's face punching time

And she'll dress like a queen
of Byzantine leanings
Then she'll carelessly cut you
Feel guilt while you're bleeding
But she'll bring out the best
And the worst you can be
She has ears like an Elf
Cause she'll always be Ardwyn to me
--Mhmm--

CHORUS:
Oh--she takes care of herself
She can wait if she wants
She's ahead of her time
Oh—she's as fierce as a lion
So don't piss her off
Or it's face punching time

She is frequently kind
And she's suddenly cruel
She can do as she pleases
She's nobody's fool
And she can't be convicted
With her law degree
And the worst she will do
Is throw axes at you
But she'll always be Ardwyn to me
